Comeback Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Championship in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 victories have been won on hard courts
A comeback the Russian player won his initial title for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the competition final.
Medvedev, a former world number one, has had a difficult season, achieving just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the American major.
The player's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serving in specific - resulted in him exiting of the elite rankings and eventually separating with long-time mentor his previous coach.
Now working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily advanced in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought three-set win over Frenchman Moutet.
This represents the player's initial championship after the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt from March of the previous year.
The win also indicates Medvedev has won 21 championships at 21 different competitions.
"For the first time I have attended a event with my two daughters at once, so to win a title is especially meaningful," stated ranked player the champion.
"This championship is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his previous six championship matches, comprising in that event earlier this year.
His retrieving approach and regular reactions on court had led commentators to doubt if his skill to play at the highest level was finished.
Yet the athlete has implemented adjustments in the past month, attempting to advance forward and compete positively, backed up by an enhanced serve.
The champion came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the difficult Frenchman, securing 4 of the final five exchanges to gain the advantage.
The pair swapped break points in the following set before the Frenchman, striving for his first ATP Tour title, gained dominance to create a third set.
He rescued 4 early-game break points in a competitive third set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to serve for the match.
Appropriately, Medvedev clinched victory with a shot at the front of the court, with Moutet unable to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
