Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the censorship procedure.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to pass a law mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that included little previously unseen information.
