Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
